Am 16. April organisierten Elena und Tobias einen Vortrag in Karlshuld. Mit ihren Bildern haben sie die Aufmerksamkeit genau dort hin gelenkt, wo sie seit Jahrzehnten zu kurz kam: Kibera! Neugierig aber auch schockiert zeigte sich das Publikum über Kibera, dem größten Slum Afrikas. Wir danken all die großzügigen Spender. Sie tragen wesentlich dazu bei, unseren nächsten Meilenstein zu erreichen: ein eigenes Haus für KiberaAID.

On 16th of April Elena and Tobias organised a lecture in Karlshuld. In the last few centuries, hardly anybody took note of a place called Kibera. But on this evening, everybody of the audience experienced what it is like to live in Kibera, the biggest slum of Africa. We want to give thanks to all the generous donors. They all contribute to our next milestone: an own house for KiberaAID, where children can read, play and have fun!

The family of KiberaAID wish everybody happy eastern and a blessing time. In this blog you can read an article written by Brian Otieno. We thank Camilo Analo for her great support to KiberaAID

„Two weeks ago we received a huge collections of clothes, shoes, text books and bags from our very good friend Camila Analo. The donations were later on distributed to KiberaAID KidsClub on the 28th of March. Over 40 kids received clothes and about 6 were given shoes which were limited. The day was a great success and we look forward to more of such days in the future. Our next meeting will be on the 11th March, 2015 and we are pleased to announce that anyone who is interested to join us with atleast something on their hands is very much welcomed.

The following is a list of what we really need the most so as to continue with our noble cause for helping the kids and families in Kibera:
?Stationery such as books, pencils, pens, colors, drawing materials, etc.
?Clothes, shoes, schoolbags, etc
?Food items such as rice, beans, sugar, maize meal, etc.

If we manage to get a stable supply of all these then our aims and objectives will be on the right track. We are here to do our very best and to make a difference in this changing world. If we team up then the dream of KiberaAID will be a living reality.

So far we have supported over 70 kids in Kibera since June, 2014 and we are not stop anytime soon. If were all can embrace the spirit of philanthropist like that of Miss Camila Analo then we would be living in a constant better world. So far KiberaAID is running on private and donated money from our friends in Germany – Tobias and Elena. They are students and not employed or working.

Bryan’s Note: KidsClub is the name of our Saturday programs which is usually held twice every month on Saturdays, with KidsClub we are destined to teach the Kids of Kibera basic and general knowledge. Things that possibly they are not taught in school. KidsClub has been a great success and we get to see new faces every time we are having a meeting. More kids are joining us and we cannot chase them but would rather use our little available resources to achieve our objectives. In KidClub we also nurture talents and skills. Our kids are highly talented. We have great artists, dancers, poets, singers, actors and many others in KidsClub, and we want to see them make a life out of what they do very best. Support us. „

IN PURSUIT OF MORALS

It is very interesting seeing the gradual change in a child?s way of living especially when that impact was made by you. Since we started the Saturday program? Kids Club, we have seen tremendous growth amongst the kids that we serve. I discovered that the simple things that somehow you can choose to ignore are the very things that matter a lot to kids. For example; sharpening a pencil for them, carrying them high and swaying them in the air, appreciating their little drawings even if it?s not that good and smiling back at them when they smile at you. Kids love activities and this is where their potential can be provoked easily. Their talents and skills start showing up the moment we involve them in dancing, singing, performing poems, drawing, football and storytelling. It is evident that kids perform very well in what they love doing and they do it with lots of enthusiasm and passion. This puts a smile, and to some extent laughter, to this innocent faces that we care for. After accessing them to their interests, we then start building their moral state. It is not quite difficult to talk about God and godly things in Kenya since the gospel is widely spread over here and has been welcomed with much hospitality over the years. We get another advantage from our Kenyan academic system which offers Christian Religious Education (CRE) as one of the subjects. Most kids do not get moral support from their parents as most parents are ever busy trying to make both ends meet. There?s a limited or no time at all for parent-child bonding and this issue is not being addressed by anyone. This is why we decided to create a platform that gives attention to the wellbeing and the personality of the kids. We do our best to mould them to live a God fearing life which will serve them well because the society they live in has a bad reputation after all. At least we are sure of some responsible youths, some good leaders and mentors in future because of this investment we are doing now. Fact still remains that the children are the future generation and they will take charge and responsibility of the things to come. The kind of treatment we will get from them when we are elderly and weak depends on how we take care of them now. This includes what we teach them, what we do to them, where we go with them and how much attention we give them. If a child knows that God loves him/her, he/she will be flexible to show love to others. If a child knows that he is supposed to be kind and obedient, for sure he will adhere to that because a child?s mind is flexible in that it easily takes in what it is being fed with and hopefully he grows up with that. A God fearing personality is what we try to bring up in these lovely kids of ours. We give direction as we pursue their morals and understanding.

Kibera beheimatet viele herumstreunende Hunde. Manche Einwohner schließen enge Freundschaften mit ihnen, doch die meisten sehen sie eher als lästig an. Aber egal ob man sie mag oder nicht, sie sind im Slum derart selbstverständlich, dass sie erst auffallen würden, wenn sie verschwunden wären. Dieses Bild zeigt eine Szene aus Kibera, wie sie für den ganzen Slum typisch ist.

Kibera is home to lots of roaming dogs. A few dwellers make friends with some of these dogs, but most inhabitants do not really like dogs. But whether or not they like or dislike these dogs, everybody in Kibera is used to them. These animals are that common, that everybody in Kibera would recognize them only when they would have disappeared. This picture shows a very typical scene in Kibera.

Today there was an article in the newspaper about KiberaAID. Thanks to Maggie Zurek, she wrote a very nice story.

Hohe Arbeitslosigkeit, menschenunwürdige Lebensverhältnisse und billige Preise für qualitativ schlechten aber extrem hochprozentigen Alkohol. Es überrascht nicht, dass diese Bedingungen die Wahrscheinlichkeit eines alkoholabhängigen Lebens erhöhen. In Kibera neigen bereits Kinder zum Alkoholkonsum ? vor lauter Verzweiflung.

Um sich zu betrinken, trinken Menschen aus Kibera meist nur ein Getränk: Changaa. Es ist ein günstiges und hochgefährliches Getränk. Dessen Ethanolgehalt ist so enorm, dass ein Glas davon einer Person für immer das Augenlicht nehmen kann. Viele Menschen verfallen der Sucht die Changaa verursacht. Früher oder später erblinden die meisten von ihnen, falls sie nicht schon vorher daran gestorben sind. Die Gefahren von Changaa sind bekannt, doch oft besiegt die Hoffnungslosigkeit die Vernunft. Das wissen auch die Personen, die Changaa verkaufen. Dahinter stecken meist Menschen, die den Verkauf von Changaa bereuen, doch es ist dessen einzige Chance Geld zu verdienen. Für sie und mit ihnen versuchen wir Lösungen zu finden. Zudem erklären wir den Kinder aus unserer Gruppe, warum Changaa so gefährlich ist, und dass sie nie in Versuchung geraten sollen, dieses Getränk zu sich zu nehmen – um nicht das Augenlicht zu verlieren, sondern um Licht nach Kibera zu bringen. Das Bild unten zeigt einen betrunkenen Jungen, der Stunden lang am Boden lag und nicht ansprechbar war.

High level of unemployment, inhuman living conditions and cheap alcohol which has a bad quality and high percentage of ethanol. It is not surprising that these aspects are leading to an increasing number of people, who are addicted to alcohol. In Kibera there are already young children who are tending to drink alcohol because they are desperated. In order to get drunk, most people from Kibera buy changaa. It is a cheap and very dangerous drink. It contains a lot of ethanol thus one cup of this poisonous cocktail can make somebody blind. Sooner or later, everyone who is addicted to changaa will die. Everybody knows the danger of changaa, but sometimes desperation is stronger than somebodies common sense. Also the persons who are selling changaa know these problems. They are absolutely not proud of selling this dangerous drink but it is their only possibility to earn some money in Kibera. Thus we are searching for a solution in order to avoid selling changaa. We also talk about this issue with the children of our group as well. We tell them never trying changaa, because changaa is not a solution for anything, it only causes bigger problems. The attached picture shows a drunken boy, who was lying on the ground and not was not responsive for hours.

With KiberaAID many things have to be organised for 2015. It will be an exciting year with many activities. Thus Brian Otieno created a really nice calendar. Every month shows a picture and a few sentences, which are delivering a lot of facts about Kibera. Every photo taken by Brian is an artwork which tells so many things about this impoverished area.
