With „KiberaStories“ Bryan delivers articles about what is going on in Kibera. Since he was born in Kibera he knows what it is like to live in this slum. He is telling true stories, not those faked ones you see in the tv-news.

Our secretary Kelvin Obadiah Juma and our organizations coordinator Victor Oduor are contributing with interesting article about KiberaAID, Crime Course, The Unknown and state of the day crime. Enjoy it.

Nur 20 Prozent der Bewohner von Kibera haben legalen Zugang zu Strom. Mehr will die kenianische Regierung nicht in das Stromnetz Kiberas investieren. Dabei braucht jeder von Kiberas Einwohner Strom. Nicht nur für Licht, sondern auch für Radio oder gegebenfalls Fernseher. Diese Geräte sind für sie die einzige Möglichkeit, irgendetwas von dem, was draußen in der Welt passiert, zu erfahren. Zeitungen sind zu teuer, genauso wie die täglichen Fahrten ins Stadtzentrum. Wenn sie also irgendetwas wissen wollen, was außerhalb dem Slum passiert, benötigen sie Strom, notfalls auch illegal. Folglich zapfen die Bewohner mit unprofessionell verlegten Stromleitungen Energie vom elektrischen Netzwerk ab. Eine zuverlässige Isolation ist dabei nicht gegeben, da die wenigsten von ihnen Erfahrung mit Strom haben. Dadurch können elektrische Kurzschlüsse entstehen, welche wiederum zu Feuer und viele anderen Gefahren führen können. Wenn es regnet, sind die Folgen noch schlimmer. Die elektrische Isolierung ist dann in vielen Fällen überhaupt nicht mehr gegeben, sodass 325 Volt an den Dächern oder auch an den kleinen Bächen in den Gassen liegen können. Kinder die an diesen Bächen spielen oder ein tief stehendes Dach berühren, sterben an den Folgen der hohen Spannung. Die Regierung sieht von jeder Maßnahme ab, die diesen Zustand verbessern könnte.

Only 20 percent of the residents in Kibera have electricity in a legally way. The government does not invest any money in expansion of Kibera’s power grid. But, everyone needs electricity. Not only for lights but also for radio and tv. For most of the inhabitants of Kibera, radio and tv are the only opportunity to get any information of what is happening outside of the slum. Newspaper is to expensive, as well as the fee for a bus which could take them to the city center. As a result of despair people from Kibera started building up power lines on their own, in order to provide electricity to their home. These are not professional power lines, so the wires are not well isolated. This can lead to bypass, which causes fire and lot of other dangers.
When it starts to rain the insulation can go down to nearly 0 percent. If this is happening then there are 325 Volts on the roof or on the small muddy streams. Sometimes young children get electrocuted while playing on the stream or touching an iron sheet. The government is just standing back and doing nothing at all about the situation at hand.

Ein Stift und ein Blatt Papier kann ein Kind in eine neue Welt versetzen. Eine Welt von Kreativität, Friede und Träume. Genau aus diesem Grund stellen wir für die Kinder einen ruhigen Platz sowie Stifte, Schreibmaterial und etwas zum Naschen zur Verfügung. Für Stunden vergessen die Kinder die schlechten Lebensbedingungen im Slum und wir fördern dabei ihr zeichnerisches Geschick. Einige der Kinder die wir unterstützen, sind äußerst talentiert. In ihren jungen Jahren erklären wir ihnen, wie man 3D-Zeichnungen anfertigt. Das schult vor allem ihre abstrakte Vorstellungskraft. Vielleicht wird eins dieser Kinder ein Künstler, der seine Werke im Stadtzentrum verkaufen kann. Kibera ist eine Anhäufung von Talenten. Es hängt nur davon ab, den Kindern Unterstützung, Hoffnung und Mut zu geben.

A pen and one piece of paper can take a child into another world. A world of creativity, peace and dreams. Thats the reason why we regularly organise sessions of drawing. It distracts children from the bad living conditions and we nurture their skills of drawing as well. Some of the children we are supporting are absolutely talented. We teach them how to create 3D-pictures so they get a visual thinking. Maybe sometime one of our children will become a famous illustrator. Kibera is a accumulation of talents. It only depends on giving these children support, hope and courage.

In Kibera wachsen viele (vielleicht sogar die meisten) Kindern ohne Mutter oder Vater (und manchmal ohne beiden) auf. Ohne die Möglichkeit eine Schule zu besuchen. Ohne einer friedvollen Umgebung. Ohne Selbstwertgefühl. Ohne Hoffnung auf ein besseres Leben. Die Frage ist, ob es in diesem Slum überhaupt eine Situation gibt, wo ein Kind einen Grund zum Lächeln findet? Ja, die gibt es definitiv. Ein kleines rundes Ding aus Leder kann Glück, Spaß und Zusammenhalt für viele Stunden hervorbringen. Das ist die Macht von Teamsport. Das ist die Macht von Fußball!

In Kibera many (or maybe most) children grow up without a dad or completely without parents. Without a chance for school. Without a peaceful invironment. Without self esteem. Without a hope for a better life. So is there any situation where a child can find a reason to smile? Yes, there it is. A small spherical and leathery thing can bring fun, happieness and cohesion for many hours. This is the power of teamsports. This is the power of football!

I interlock my fingers to pray,
And so to the ground I lay,
And close my eyes to welcome the darkness,
And for sure darkness came,
The darkness of the young mothers, who clean people?s fabrics,
The darkness of the young mothers, who sell groundnuts by the roadside,
Some are widows,
Some confused, abused and used; by their ?better halves?
Who fall under the tag, ?CERTIFIED ALCOHOLICS?
And so I open my eyes and take a stroll,
And I see this confused society?s fall,
The situation is actual and serious after all,
Mothers never got the opportunity to sit before a teacher,
Never got the opportunity to face the chalkboard,
The opportunity to manipulate a pen and a paper,
And so they struggle to change the situation,
To get rid of the undesired destination,
For their kids, they strive to do all these,
And with the little pennies they get from their hustles,
Their kids manage to hold a pen and a notepad,
Feed their ever-hungry stomachs,
Pay rent for their tiny mud-built structures,
But before the month ends,Debts, debts and debts come flowing,
School fees has always been the struggle,
And the kids are used to these unfortunate lifestyles,
They are forced to take off their tattered uniforms,
And they work in every aspect,
To help their mothers hustle for the day,
While hoping a Messiah will come their way,
To cast these problems and sorrows away!

On last weekend we organzied again a distribution of stationery and clothes to children of Kibera. Now the children are able to attend school with necessary equipment like pen and notepads. Every children got a T-Shirt as well. We hope this goods enables them to do well at school. Enjoy our gallery about this distribution.
